Black paper, found in our black page notebooks, can be used for a wide range of purposes, such as journaling, sketching, framing and drawing, and creating beautiful works of art. Whatever you plan to do, it’s good to know which pens and pencils work well with this unique type of paper.
The best pens for journaling and drawing are gel pens – they use a pigmented water-based gel and leave a much stronger mark on writing surfaces than ink-based pens. There are a number of brands to choose from, but one of the most famous is Sakura Gelli Rolls (also known as Sakura Ballsign in their native Japan). Sakura was the first company to produce gel pens, putting them on sale in the mid-1980s.
The main difference between the American Sakura Gelli Rolls and the original Japanese Sakura Ballsign pens are the tip sizes: the Ballsign pens are thinner, at 0.8mm, compared to the US version’s 1mm tip size. Classic Gelli Rolls also come in 0.5mm, 0.6mm and 0.8mm, but these are not as good for darker toned papers, with the exception of the white Gelli Rolls – generally recognized as the best white pens for use on black paper; its smooth flowing ink doesn’t skip and isn’t “scratchy” like some other brands can be.

Another Sakura range that works very well on black paper is the Decorese range – beautifully designed, it comes in a number of pastel shades that will make your drawings really stand out.
If you use toned paper for drawing purposes, you may be interested in using gel pens to achieve clean lines for your work. The Sakura Gelli Roll Moonlight range has a set of gray toned pencils that will be good for this.
For a medium that allows you to be more free with your art, you might want to try markers or pencils. A brand we really love are Archer and Olive acrylic pens. Using water-based acrylic ink, they work on white, black and colored paper, similar to acrylic paint. There are three themed sets – Primaries, Jewels and Tropicals. How Can I Write In White Ballpoint Pen Ink On Black Paper?
Uni’s Posca markers are another well-known brand of paint markers, made famous by the graffiti artists and graffiti battles of Secret Walls (formerly Secret Wars). They are available in over 56 colors, with a range of finishes including fluorescent, metallic and glitter. They work on canvas, wood, glass and metal, but provide excellent coverage on black paper. With eight different tip styles and weights, these would be great for anyone designing colorful pieces of street art and more.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that Faber Castell Pitt pencils wouldn’t do well on black paper, but they might surprise you. These artist-quality, light-fast markers work well together: if you use a white pencil to sketch your design first, the bright colors will show up brilliantly on dark paper. Available in 60 colors, they’re made with India ink and come mostly with brush-style nibs, but certain shades (black, sepia, and gray, among others) have nibs in different widths; lighter colors are transparent, so they will be opaque and can be used as “glazes” for other colors. There are even metallic shades, which are perfect for this type of paper.
Another medium that’s great for black and colored paper is colored pencils – you want some that are highly pigmented, and that layer and blend well to get the best experience.
