For our kids photography courses we use compact cameras. We’ve thought carefully about what kids often use their camera for, and what it needs to make sure it can withstand a kid’s mess! So we think these are some of the best cameras for kids.

Best Cameras For Beginners 2023 To Help You Learn Photography

Bridge cameras are great for both kids and teens. With easy-to-use camera modes and settings, both automatic and manual, and amazing zoom capabilities without having to dip into expensive lenses.

If you’re looking for the best camera for older teenagers, we recommend skipping to the next section on DSLRs.

The Panasonic DMC-FZ330 has a 25-600mm zoom, which means you can capture panoramic landscapes, as well as get close to objects by zooming in. This camera also boasts full HD 4k video for amazing fast action scenes. The Panasonic DMC-FZ330 has the ability to use fun automatic scene settings for the younger or more beginner photographer, and the ability to use more manual controls for the older or more experienced photographer.

The 20.3MP Canon Powershot SX70 HS is another great Bridge Camera, giving you an amazing 65x optical zoom so you can capture everything from distant details to macro shots without changing the lens. As well as taking beautiful stills, you can also shoot video in ultra-high definition 4K. This camera is capable of using fun automatic settings, as well as more manual settings for more control. Work in 0 – 40 °C, 10 – 90% humidity and upload your photos straight to your phone with built-in Wifi. Great for a techy teenager who wants to take their photography to the next level.

DSLRs are professional cameras, so they’re perfect for the more serious photographer who wants to take their photography to the next level. DSLRs allow you to change your lens so you have the freedom to experiment, with a sharper image as a result (compared to a bridge zoom). All DSLR cameras allow you to use fully manual settings, giving you complete control over your camera, but they also all have automatic/semi-automatic settings so you have a choice. All in all, it’s a more versatile camera and perfect for beginners, novices and professionals alike. We think these are some of the best cameras for a teenager.

The Nikon D3500 is a fantastic beginner DSLR. This camera is usually bought as a kit with an 18-55mm lens which is great for everyday photography (we use this lens on our DSLRs in our youth photography courses). The D3500’s large 24.2 MP captures detailed photos and Full HD movies—even when you’re shooting in low light. You can apply creative effects to the camera and use Nikon’s SnapBridge app to send photos straight to your phone on the go. With all automatic and semi-automatic settings at your fingertips, right through to fully manual settings to continue when your teen is ready.

The Canon EOS 2000D is an easy-to-use 24.1 Megapixel camera suitable for beginners – delivering beautiful photos and cinematic Full HD movies. This camera is usually purchased as a kit with an 18-55mm lens. You can play with creative settings in Creative Auto mode and partial or full manual controls when you’re ready. Sharing on social media is easy with the Canon Camera Connect app. A great camera for an enthusiastic beginner to learn and grow.

Nowadays, mirrorless cameras are becoming the next best thing. Think of them as a DSLR without the mirror inside. This makes them more compact, lighter and easy to use with high quality technology. Mirrorless also offers better image stabilization than DSLRs for less shaky photos, and with fewer moving parts your camera will be super quiet for close-up shots of that animal! While the ‘high tech’ side of things may seem intimidating, it allows for faster autofocus whether in photo or video mode. We’re seeing a lot of professional photographers switch to mirrorless for the specs they have and as things go, the big companies are no longer making DSLRs and are sticking with Mirrorless cameras moving forward.

The Sony A6000, when it was released, had the fastest AF of any camera to date. At 24 MP and 11FPS, this camera can shoot high quality shots at lightning fast speeds! For added convenience, the screen flips out allowing users to shoot at angles above or below them when looking at the screen. For a more secure hold the camera also has a compact grip built into the right side for a secure hold, although we still suggest getting a strap or wrist cuff for added security! As a similar size of a compact camera, the back buttons can be a bit difficult for larger hands, however the quality you get with a camera you can fit in a pocket or bag is incredible! All have added wifi features to share photos with your phone.

As an alternative to the Sony camera above, here’s Canon’s version of a compact mirrorless, the M200. Again we are talking about a similar size to a compact camera, 24 MP although 6fps. Unfortunately, even this one doesn’t have a hand grip like the Sony above and requires a more secure hold when shooting. This shouldn’t be an issue as it’s still light, even with the extra lens. It’s also easy to get creative, thanks to a guided user interface and our unique Creative Assist mode. An advantage to this camera is that the screen flips up (see picture above) so you can enjoy seeing yourself on the screen when it’s in selfie mode! However, the screen can’t face down which won’t work for those who want to shoot with the screen above their heads. The buttons on the camera, again small, are simpler than the Sony. Depending on how you see yourself as a photographer, this would be perfect for beginners, but maybe not for those who want to develop their skills further.
