If this scene from the Four Seasons pool in Maui looks familiar, it’s because it stars in HBO’s “White Lotus.” Mia A’i Shimabuku for
When planning a trip to Maui, it can be tempting to book any hotel on the beach. And while that would make for a great vacation, as a travel writer based in Hawaii, I believe that any visit to Maui should include enjoying what makes the island, well, Maui. Each area has its own distinct feel, so it’s easy to find the right location for your individual vacation vision.
For the person who likes to shop, consider staying in the historic town of Lahaina, the bustling central part of the island. For people who want to unplug and immerse themselves in nature, camp in a beautiful state park, like Waianapanapa State Park.

A view of the expansive reflection pool at the Grand Wailea resort. Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort
The Grand Wailea is the most iconic resort on Maui, in my opinion, with an amazing beachfront property that spans over 40 acres on the south coast of the island and is designed to look like a museum. in outdoor art.
West Maui Vs South Maui
The resort offers many amenities for guests to enjoy, such as free beach cruisers and nine pools (from an adult-only pool to one with a tube slide). They also organize weekly cultural tours led by the resort’s Hawaiian Cultural Ambassador to learn more about Hawaiian culture and history and how the resort strives to uphold those values.
There are seven on-site restaurants, including ‘Ikena, where the Saturday rosé brunch features refreshing pours of rosé and local fare like ahi ceviche and crab benedict. It’s probably the best brunch buffet I’ve ever been to, complete with a breezy ocean view.
There’s also a nightly luau dining experience (except Sundays and Wednesdays) where performers retell the important stories of how Hawaii was founded – there’s even an aerialist set up from a palm tree. I also booked an appointment with the in-house astrologer and had my chart read, which added a fun and memorable flair to my stay.
The uniquely shaped pool at the Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua has plenty of daybeds on the deck for guests to use. The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua
Should I Stay On Maui’s North Shore?
For people who want a quieter, more secluded Maui experience, head to The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua, on the less-trafficked northwest side of the island. I visited in April and found the resort to be one of the most peaceful places I have ever stayed. The sprawling resort may feel remote but has everything you need on-site, including a 20,000-square-foot pool deck, tennis courts, golf courses, and plenty of bays to explore. The resort also prides itself on strong cultural program offerings, such as a daily sunset ceremony and a morning tour along the border of the Honokahua Preservation Site, a nearby which is an ancient burial ground.
Oceanfront rooms and balconies offer secluded views of the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort. Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort
Oceanfront rooms have motorized shades, so you can let the sunrise flood in early morning before turning the shade back to sleep. My room had a view of Kahoolawe and Molokai islands in the distance. There are also more spacious suites and even three-bedroom private villas on the property if you’re traveling in a group.
The hardest decision of my stay was whether to enjoy the beach or one of the four infinity pools. There are also many restaurants and bars on-site – I enjoyed having a drink during sunset at the outdoor Lehua Lounge, which has live music most nights.

For many, Maui is a beautiful paradise of relaxation and beauty. The beautiful Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea captures that essence with its majestic oceanfront views, three saltwater pools, a spa, tennis courts, and more. The 18-room Plantation Inn is within walking distance of Maui’s best restaurants, shops, and activities. Mia A’i Shimabuku for
For guests who want to stay within walking distance of Maui’s best restaurants, shops, and things to do without breaking the bank, I recommend the intimate 18-room Plantation Inn for in low-key, charming accommodations.
Located in the heart of historic Lahaina, breakfast is also included, adding value, and staying here has privileges at the hotel’s sister property, the Kaanapali Beach Hotel, where I grew up staying when my family visited Maui. I have the best memory of walking straight to the beach and whale watching in the winter. It costs a little more than the Plantation Inn, so the former is a good choice if you want to save without sacrificing the amenities.
Both hotels also offer cultural activities for families, such as hula and lei making. They may lean on the simpler side, but these hotels are, in my opinion, landmarks in west Maui.

Perched on the mountain at an altitude of 3,200 feet, the cottages provide a much-needed escape to nature and have lanais that offer an impeccable view – perfect while sipping your morning coffee. Two of the five cottages have stairs to the upper bed for a wonderful, romantic night’s sleep.
