Kia Motors, a well-known South Korean automaker, has managed to make a name for itself in India with cars like the Seltos and Carnival, in a short span of a year. For its next foray into India, Kia has decided to place its bets on the hotly contested compact SUV segment and launched the Sonet SUV. The all-new Kia Sonet electric car has a starting price of INR 6.71 lakh*, making it the most affordable compact SUV in the country, despite competing with the likes of Maruti Brezza and Hyundai Venue.

Some important features of the celtos are carried over to the sonnet. The list includes a 10.25-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system, built-in eSIM for UVO car connectivity feature, automatic climate control with integrated air purifier, wireless charger and electric sunroof. As for the powertrain, there are four engine and five gearbox options including a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol motor, a 1.5-litre petrol unit and two 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel units with different configurations. In terms of gearbox options, on offer are a 5- and 6-speed manual, 6-speed iMT, a 7-speed DCT and 6-speed automatic gearboxes.

The list of best SUVs under 1 million continues with the Hyundai niche, which shares its platform and engine options with the aforementioned Kia Sonet. However, the Hyundai Venue was the first SUV in India to get connected car technology called BlueLink and the first SUV in India to get IMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission), beating the Kia Sonet to the punch. Since its launch, the niche has received an impressive response in the domestic market with a major chunk of its sales coming from the popular 1.0-litre turbo-petrol variant.

The 1.0-litre engine, similar to the Kia Sonet, produces 120 hp and 172 Nm of torque. Gearbox options with this engine include a 7-speed DCT and a 6-speed iMT. There is also the NA 1.2-litre petrol engine that generates 82 bhp and 114 Nm of torque. The 1.5-litre diesel engine, on the other hand, delivers 99 hp and 240 Nm of torque. Gearbox options include a 6-speed manual unit and 6-speed iMT for both these engines. Prices of the Hyundai Venue start from INR 6.75 lakh*.

To put things in perspective, more than 5.5 lakh units of the Vitara Brezza have been sold since its launch four years ago. At the 2020 Auto Expo, Maruti-Suzuki launched the updated Vitara Brezza with a petrol engine for the first time, replacing the popular 1.3-litre DDiS diesel variant. An automatic gearbox was also added, replacing the AMT from the previous iteration. The rest of the changes include mostly cosmetic updates.

Talking about the new powertrain options, it gets the widely used 1.5-litre K-series petrol engine. The engine produces 104 bhp of power and 138 Nm of output. A 5-speed MT is also offered along with the 4-speed AT. In terms of fuel efficiency, the MT version returns a mileage of 17.03 kmpl and the AT version 18.76 kmpl. The Nexon not only elevated Tata’s brand name but also helped to promote India’s image in the international market as a country of safe car makers, not just affordable car makers.
