Business Model Canvas Analysis

Business Model Canvas Analysis – The Business Model Canvas provides a structured and visual “one-pager” approach to understanding how a company, project, or product can create, deliver, and capture value. It is a snapshot that helps describe and evaluate new or existing business models.

Developed in 2010 by Yves Pigneur and Alexandre Osterwalder, authors of “Business Model Generation,” the Business Model Canvas was originally intended as a tool for entrepreneurs and small business owners. Since then, it has been widely adopted by companies of all shapes and sizes around the world. There are several reasons for this:

Sometimes called the “business matrix,” the business model canvas consists of nine main categories built around three main themes:

Tesla Business Model

Who are your customers? What target demographics do you hope to serve? Are they consumers (B2C) or other companies (B2B)?

How do you solve customer problems? How can your business or product offer solve those problems? Why should your customers prefer your business or product over a competitor? What makes your business or product unique?

What kind of relationship will you have with your customers? Are your customers autonomous? Do they need support? Are they a community? How do you communicate with your customers? What tone would you use? How do you plan to retain customers?

What owned and operated channels are you using to reach your customers? What third party channels do you use to promote your business or product? How will your customers find your business or product?

What resources (human, financial, or material) are needed to deliver value? What resources are needed to manage customer relationships? What resources are you currently lacking?

Who are the partners you can’t do business without? Who are your suppliers? Who are your lawyers? Who are your other strategic partners?

How does your business make money? Do you sell individual (one-off) products or services? Do you sell subscriptions? How much are customers willing to pay for your product or service?

Apple Business Model Canvas: How It Became The King Of Innovation

Despite the foundation, Canva’s journey began five years ago, in 2012, when Melanie Perkins and Cliff Obrecht were students at the University of Western Australia. At the time, Perkins was offering InDesign and Photoshop classes to students — and people realized that the software was too difficult to learn and use. Students would add about half a year to learn what tools were available in the applications, and Perkins thought there should be a way to do similar tasks with simpler tools. In this way, together with her boyfriend Obrecht, Perkins had the idea to develop a simple online tool for creating school yearbooks.

They took loans and built fusion books. Users will design the books, which the young couple will print and distribute to schools across Australia. It was – and remains – a success: it is currently the country’s largest school yearbook publisher, expanding into New Zealand and France. But, as Canva can now tell, they didn’t stop there. A few years later, in 2010, Perkins attended a conference in Perth and met Bill Tai, a legendary Silicon Valley venture capitalist.

Tai was an avid kitesurfer and Perkins realized that practicing the sport was a way to get in touch with investors and thus have a network. Her dedication paid off and in no time she secured huge investments and created Canva with a great team of engineers. But to go beyond that, they needed some technical person, and that came with Cameron Adams, an ex-Googler.

A few months later, in 2012, their first round of funding was able to put the Canva website online. Now, Canva has helped create nearly 2 billion designs in 190 countries. Its value will reach $15 billion in 2021 and counting.

Canva partnered with printers to print and distribute the printed material. Users can build their designs on the apps and receive the physical material at their address. Canva charges for the service based on product type, order volume and delivery location.

Quick Guide To The Business Model Canvas

Sometimes people don’t see the need to subscribe but want to buy some premium design. In such cases, Canva charges a one-time fee for one-time usage. Users can find paid images and templates, ready to use. Content is developed by designers who leave their jobs on the platform. For each sale, Canva takes 35%. For content sold on the Pro plan, creators get 50% (minus taxes and processing fees).

Canva also has a design school, through which the company offers online and in-person classes, hosted by Canva’s experts, on design, branding, and social media. Online classes are free, and existing ones start at $5.

Canva’s revenue is based on the sale of user subscriptions and one-time licensing of content. Additionally, the design school has in-person classes and printed delivery materials.

After the acquisition of Zeetings in 2018, Pixabay and Pexels in 2019, and Kaleido.ai and Smartmockups in 2021, Canva seems to be emerging and dominating the market relatively significantly.

Business Model, Lean Canvas Or Value Proposition Canvas?

Link Building Blocks: Every Value Proposition Needs a Customer Segment and Revenue Stream! When everything is on board, take a step back. A short break. Did you miss something? Forgot something?

If you have multiple customer segments, it’s a good idea to choose a color for each segment on the post-it notes you use. That way you can easily see if each segment has a value proposition and revenue stream.

Don’t mix ideas for a future state with what’s happening now, don’t mix different departments!

If you work for a large organization, you will find different valuations and business models. If so, ask different departments to map out their own business models. You can compare them later.

Verify that each customer segment is tied to a value proposition and revenue stream. Make sure everything on the left side of the canvas is needed to support the right side of the canvas. Everything else can go.

Have an artist visualize your business model. This helps create impact when sharing the model, making it easier for others to connect. The Business Model Canvas is a strategic management template used to develop new business models and document existing ones.

It offers a visual chart with elements that describe a firm’s or product’s valuation, infrastructure, customers, and finances.

Alexander proposed in 2005 the nine “building blocks” of the business model design template that came to be called the Business Model Canvas.
