The shift from the current linear to circular economic model has attracted increasing attention from major global companies such as Google, Unilever, Renault and policymakers attending the World Economic Forum. The reason for this is financial gain. However, the global shift from one economic model to another also involves small companies at the micro level. Therefore, a comprehensive knowledge of circular business model design is necessary in order to achieve this. Stimulating and promoting the adoption of the circular economy Existing business models for the circular economy have limited transferability. And there is no comprehensive framework that supports all types of companies to design a circular business model. This study used a literature review to identify and characterize the circular economy based on business model structure. An investigation into the eight subdomains of circular business model research was used to define the elements of the new business model canvas in the context of a circular economy. Two new components have been identified: the take-back system and the adoption factor. This led to the creation of an expansive conceptual framework for the circular business model canvas. The Triple Fit challenge was also recognized as a key factor in the transition to a circular business model. Some directions for further research have been identified as well.

This study considers the circular economy as a new contribution to the development of business model theory. The following research therefore provides a conceptual framework of a circular business model to support practitioners in the process of transitioning from a more linear to circular business model.
The paper is structured as follows: Section 2 presents the concept of this study and methodological observations; Section 3 specifies the specificity of the circular business model based on the 8 subdomains of research in the area of business model proposed by Pateli. and Giaglis [15]. Section 4 distinguishes the results of the review based on the business model framework developed by Osterwalder and Pigneur [8]. Thus, nine components of the business model framework are unique in the context of a circular economy. This section outlines the need to extend the business model framework to be more applicable to the circular economy.
