If your startup or small business is looking for funding, one option is to apply for a small business grant. However, with strict eligibility criteria and fierce competition for funding, what should you consider before you apply?
A grant is a sum of money given by a government or an organization from the public or private sector either for a general purpose (e.g. to start a business) or something more specific (e.g. to explore certain foreign markets).
Welcome To This Round Up Of The Latest Free Support For Your Business
To apply for a small business grant, you or your business must usually meet strict eligibility criteria. Sometimes grants are only available to startups, in other cases established firms can apply. You may have to work in a specific sector or location. The grant may only be available to those who sell or want to sell abroad or to business owners from a specific group, regardless of whether it is related to gender, ethnicity, age or other criteria.
You don’t have to pay back the grant, of course, but you do have to pay back the loan. Sometimes relatively modest amounts (up to £1,000) are available through grants, but others offer UK SMEs up to £100,000 or more in grants.
In reality, small business grants and start-up grants are few and far between and competition is fierce. For a variety of reasons, applications are not always successful, although there are many things you can do to increase your chances of approval.
In some cases, small business grants may cover only part of the costs, for example, if they are given for projects. So you may need to determine if your business can secure the rest of the financing and determine how this will affect your cash flow. You may not receive a grant until the project is close to completion.
