Camera For Sports Action Shots

Since releasing its first camera in 2004, GoPro has earned a reputation as the benchmark brand for action cameras. This, its flagship model, has been revamped over the years and now boasts both front and rear displays and 30 percent more battery life over its predecessors, as well as a removable lens so that you can apply variations according to your needs. The camera is waterproof to 10m and offers image stabilization (meaning your footage is automatically adjusted and wobble-free). The touchscreen is intuitive and supported by hands-free voice command, and the integrated mount means no external case is required. Shoot in 5K ultra-HD or capture photos in 20 megapixels.

How To Take Better Action Photos

Founded in 2015, Insta360 may be a relative newcomer but its modular One R action camera has quickly become popular due, in part, to a choice of three easily interchangeable lenses, including a 360-degree option. A recent collaboration with Leica adds fresh styling and a best-in-class one-inch sensor lens (which for comparison is about twice the size of the GoPro Hero9’s sensor). The resulting 5.3K video and 19-megapixel stills are of exceptional quality – perhaps the most superior of any action camera – and work particularly well in low light. The camera is water resistant up to 5m and has all the features you would expect, such as automatic stabilization, but it is also future-proof as new releases will cover its three constituent components: lens, processor and battery.

This handheld, three-axis motorized gimbal camera (designed to rotate smoothly and stabilize as you film) weighs just 117g, and at 12cm tall it slips unobtrusively into a pocket or bag. Capturing 4K video (and up to 64 megapixel photos) while moving is made easy thanks to ActiveTrack 3.0, which has face recognition, keeping it in the center of the image. There is also a 4x optical zoom, a mini control stick, and a battery life of 140 minutes. One consideration is that the camera isn’t as well protected from the elements as some of the models included here, but this drawback is offset by the stable footage it captures, even when running.

Light and discreet – at just 11cm high and weighing 149g – this pocket-sized 360-degree camera ticks the boxes for convenience and portability. Equipped with a fisheye lens on each side for capturing footage in all directions, plus a touch-sensitive color screen that doubles as a menu option, it’s loaded with features: 5.7K video, 18 stills megapixels, image stabilization and a lens that changes in the event of a scratch. It’s water resistant to 10m, has an 80-minute battery, and the support app offers suggested edits that reshape your 360-degree footage.

With super-wide-angle cameras on both the front and back that shoot immersive 360-degree footage, there’s no stress about getting this camera pointed in the right direction – press ir -record and do what you have. The Max offers pin-sharp 5.6K resolution video and 16.6 megapixel photos that, once synced with the GoPro app on your smartphone, can be reframed at a desired angle. Compared to its Hero9 sibling model, it’s bigger, slightly less robust and only water resistant to 5m, but this model is fantastic as a go-anywhere camera – mounted on a car, bike or surfboard to capture the action.

What’s The Best Frame Rate + Shutter Speed For Sports Video?

Launched in 2019, this model marked the brand’s first step into handheld action cameras. Incorporating features such as a front-facing display as well as a removable lens cover, it offered a viable alternative to GoPro’s then flagship Hero7 Black model. New updates mean the Hero9 Black is now hard to beat but this Osmo Action is no slouch – it’s smaller, lighter and water resistant to 11m. Video can be shot in a fully acceptable 4K resolution and the camera has great image stabilization. In addition, if you use a DJI drone, life becomes much simpler by connecting them with the DJI Mimo app to access and edit footage.

This is the feature-packed camera to consider if you’re on a budget. Video comes in an impressive 4K but at 30 frames per second (against 60 for other major brands), while photos are 20 megapixels and has image stabilization. It is water resistant to 10m, has hands-free voice control and an external microphone option, and comes with a number of mounting options. Whether it’s football, athletics, cricket, tennis, rugby, motor racing, family fun at the local park or something else, there’s always some kind of sport to shoot.

Compared to compact cameras and compact system cameras (CSCs), the optical viewfinder of a DSLR gives you a real-time, unadulterated view of the sporting action through the lens. There is no flickering electronic viewfinder with a finite refresh rate, so panning with a DSLR (to enhance movement) is smooth.

Unlike the vast majority of compact cameras, the manual zoom rings of DSLR lenses make it much faster and easier to set exactly the focal length you want. Under the bonnet, the phase detection autofocus systems of DSLRs tend to be faster and more accurate than a compact camera’s contrast detection system or CSC.

This is especially true when tracking people or objects in continuous autofocus mode, and in dim light conditions.

We’ve all seen professional photographers at sporting events, who bring a camera and telephoto lens combination that probably costs around £10,000/$13,000. Indeed, the latest fully pro-spec bodies often cost £5,000/$7,000 on their own, so what can you expect for just £500/$650? As it turns out, quite a lot.

If you have a budget digital SLR that is a few years old, a new budget body will likely give you much greater image resolution. You can also expect faster image processing, which often helps deliver a faster continuous shooting rate, which is essential.

You’ll enjoy better overall image quality as well, especially when it comes to low noise performance at high ISO settings. For both drive rates and sensitivity, it comes down to speed.

To capture the defining moment in any sporting event, it’s often best to shoot a series of images in rapid succession. But how fast are these budget DSLRs? The Canon EOS 1100D and Nikon D3100 are the slowest in the group with a maximum drive rate of 3fps (frames per second).

However, the Canon EOS 1100D slows down further, to just 2fps, if you switch to raw quality mode instead of shooting JPEGs. Switch to raw + JPEG mode and the 1100D limps along at a horribly pedestrian 0.8fps.

The Nikon D3200 and D5100 have the joint maximum drive rates of 4fps, while both the Canon EOS 550D and Canon EOS 600D aren’t far behind, at 3.7fps.

With a fast memory card, you can expect to keep shooting with most of these cameras at their maximum drive rate for around 100 shots, although the Nikon D3200 slows down after around 40 shots . At least, that’s the case if you’re shooting in JPEG mode.

In raw mode, it is likely to clog some cameras internal memory buffers much faster. There is room for five or six raw files in the Canon buffers, and between 13 and 18 in the Nikons.

For example, we found that with a fast SanDisk Extreme Pro SDHC card, the Nikon D3200 has significantly faster write speeds than the D5100, writing a full buffer’s worth of raw files to the card in 15 seconds only, compared to the D5100’s 25 seconds. That’s no mean feat, considering the D3200’s buffer is also larger than the D5100’s.

There are many optically stabilized lenses available for Canon and Nikon DSLRs. That’s good news for eliminating camera shake, especially when shooting with a telephoto zoom lens. However, no amount of stabilization can help you freeze the action in a sports shot.

The Beautiful Game

The only way to do this is to use a fast shutter speed, which is not a problem outside on a sunny day. When it’s cloudy, and even more so in indoor arenas, you’ll need to increase the camera’s sensitivity to allow fast shutter speeds.

We used to consider film ISO 800 quite ‘fast’, but the latest digital SLRs can deliver decent image quality even at super-high sensitivity settings of ISO 3200 and above. This is a testament to how far DSLRs have come, and will allow you to shoot in a whole range of challenging situations.

All the cameras here except the Nikon D3100 stretch to ISO 6400 in their standard sensitivity ranges, and all but the Canon EOS 1100D offer extended sensitivity settings equivalent to ISO 12800 (and ISO 25600 for the Nikon D51200) .
