When you start creating digital paintings, the first thing you need is a camera. There are four main options:

A graphics tablet works a bit like a mouse and needs to be attached to your computer or laptop. You can draw on the graphic tablet surface using a special stylus (some options require charging, others do not). The surface of the graphics tablet mirrors your screen. So when you put your stylus in the top right corner, you’ll find your cursor in the top right corner of the screen.

How To Get Started With Digital Art

They are relatively inexpensive, in fact you can get a decent graphics tablet for $50 to $100. Wacom graphics tablets seem to be the industry standard, but when starting out with digital art, I would recommend getting a low-budget graphics tablet that can do a great job.

I recommend getting an A5 size graphics tablet that is large enough for liquid typing (A5 is around 5.8″ x 8.3″).

If you want to create digital art on a computer but don’t want to use a graphics tablet, a graphics display may be an option for you. They are more expensive than a graphics tablet, but allow you to draw directly on the screen. Maybe it’s more intuitive for you.

By all-in-one tablet, I mean a tablet like an iPad (Pro), Microsoft Surface Pro, or an Android tablet. There are tons of drawing apps out there and some of them are free! You may already own a tablet, but if so, you need a stylus to start making digital art. Of course, you can do it with your finger, but it won’t be very convenient and intuitive. Finally, the best thing about one tablet is that you can take them anywhere. You can draw on the train, while enjoying a cup of coffee in a cafe or while relaxing on the couch!

On Microsoft Surface Pro or Wacom Mobile Studio Pro, you can work with full software packages like Photoshop

When creating digital art on a tablet, you’ll probably want a stylus. Make sure the stylus is compatible with your tablet before purchasing. Another thing to check is whether the stylus has pressure sensitivity, as a stylus with pressure sensitivity will give a much more natural feel when drawing.

Below you can find some examples, the Wacom Bamboo Tip is compatible with some Android devices, but does not have pressure sensitivity. Apple Pencil 2 is compatible with the 3rd generation iPad Pro.

Finally, you can get started with digital art on your smartphone. The downside is that your smartphone’s screen is probably too small, making it difficult to take pictures. Also, you’ll want a stylus to make drawing a little easier.

If you’re lucky enough to have an iPhone, you can get the Procreate Pocket app, which is great for getting the feel of digital art.

Another thing you’ll need when getting started with digital painting is software or an app on your phone or tablet. Digital painting software prices range from absolutely free to super expensive. When starting out with digital art, my advice is to start with free (or low-budget) software and see if you enjoy creating digital art.

Also, the choice of digital art software depends on your hardware, as not all software is compatible with all devices. For example, Production can only run on iPads, and Photoshop can run on a PC or Microsoft Surface Pro.

Procreate Tutorials For Digital Artists

It has free digital painting software. You may want to try one of these programs before investing in a more expensive program or subscription

It is an open source software and a good alternative to Photoshop. It may not be as powerful as Photoshop, but it has a lot of options. On the Krita website, you’ll find guides and resources to get you started on your painting adventure. You can download the software for free here.

This is a great digital art software for manga artists. Mediabang Paint Pro allows you to easily create comic panels, has a comic page management tool and finally, the program’s brief instructions will allow you to easily draw lines. Also, this software is available for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS! You can download the software for free here.

Another free application and software package is Autodesk Sketchbook. It is available for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. The software has a nice, stripped-down interface, so you won’t get distracted by all the tools. You can get this digital painting software for free.

Next, we’ll cover digital painting software and apps that you need to pay for. Some of these programs or apps are very low budget and some are super expensive! However, I don’t think you really need to spend a lot of money

Free Trials: Before purchasing expensive digital art software, check for a demo or trial version. That way you can check if you like the software before you buy it.

For just $9.99 you can get the Procreate app for iPad or the Procreate Pocket for $4.99. You only need to pay once and you will get future updates which is awesome. With each update, the Procreate team adds more great features to the app, making it a true, complete art creation program. The great thing about this app, in my opinion, is that it’s so user-friendly, you’ll be creating amazing digital paintings in no time! Download the Procreate app here.

This is a great program (for Windows and Mac) when you want to feel like you’re painting with real paintings. Because imitating real paint and pencils is a great job. Corel Painter Essentials is an older version, but much cheaper!

This is a great digital art software for manga and comic artists. The software has thousands of customizable brushes, as well as a very nice AI-based painting feature.

Adobe Photoshop is used by many professional artists and has many features. Because it has so many features, it can be quite overwhelming, making it less suitable for beginners. Another downside of Photoshop (and the Fresco app for iPad) is grading. The subscription connection may not be what you want it to be, especially when it comes to the Fresco app. You will have to pay $9.99 per month, and a one-time payment of $9.99 to get Procret.

You may be confused by all the information in this article, but I want you to make up your own mind when getting started with digital painting. But maybe you want to hear my opinion and know what I do. Before I can give you the right advice, I think it’s important to think seriously about getting into digital art. When I got into digital art 12 years ago, I loved it and was willing to invest a decent amount of money. If I had to start right now, I’d probably get an iPad or iPad Air, Apple Pencil, and Procreate.

If you really want to draw and make art, maybe you should save some money
