While this crostini appetizer is best served around the holidays, I really enjoy it ANY time of the year, especially since fig jam is so easy to find.

The recipe was actually one I took home from a local Italian cooking class we took years ago. This was one of the first times I had goat cheese and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I loved it AND how easy this recipe was.

Step 1: Cut the baguette into slices about ½ inch wide. Brush each slice with olive oil.

Step 3: Once cooled, spread a dollop of goat cheese on each slice sprinkled with caramelized onions and fig marmalade.

Choosing the right bread is important when making crostini. It’s more about texture than anything else.

If you can find a good crusty artisan-style loaf that isn’t too wide, that’s your best bet. Remember that crostini are traditionally small thin slices of toasted bread. This is what differentiates crostini from bruschetta.

Crostini is the type of appetizer that should be served within a few hours, otherwise it will get soft and soggy. My recommendation is to wait with the crostini until your company arrives. Even better, have guests help you when they ask, “What can I do?”!
