How To Start Digital Drawing

How To Start Digital Drawing – Check out this quick digital art tutorial with these doodles, yeah! This is a quick demo of my usual technique in which I try to squeeze the best image out of the shortest possible time with the least amount of effort because I just want to do a lot of graphics and not focus on one for too long.

Well first I use Clip Studio which is a great piece of software that you can sometimes get for only $20 when it’s on sale. I’m drawing on a Wacom Cintiq 22HD.

OK! I start with a 30 px brush at 100 Opacity with a Hardness of 60, and a Brush Density of 80. I’m doing a rough sketch on a layer with an opacity of 40%. I usually make the canvas some sort of muted color rather than pure white because I find it easier to paint and color on a darker canvas. Also, I usually work at double the resolution that I plan to export the image at, so all of these example images are actually scaled down by 50%!

Traditional Painting Vs. Digital Painting: A Process Comparison

At the top of the drawing layer, drop a new layer to make the line. I use a brush with particles to make it look like pencil on paper. With a Brush Size of 20, Hardness of 60, Particle Size of 9, Particle Density of 6, and Splash Divergence of 50, I’m painting the sketch on a layer set to 95% opacity.

Now just using a huge old marker type brush with a hardness of 100, I make a layer where all the colors are going to go. All of her colors will cut through the layers in this master layer so it’s easy to color in without going out of the lines.

If I’m not feeling lazy, I make a new layer for each color, or group of colors. This makes it easy to change layer colors if you need to. By locking the layer’s transparent pixels, I can easily fill the layer with a new color. Since this is digital art, I like to keep the whole image as changeable as possible for as long as possible which can come in very handy these days. Each color is cut into the main red layer.

Now drop another clipping layer on top of all the colors for shading. I usually fill the entire layer with a dark brown or magenta color, and set the blendmode to hard light. Using a layer mask, I paint with black on the mask that reveals the lighted areas. I prefer to fill the canvas with shadow, then remove it to add highlights. Shading looks more natural this way. When I’m painting light, and also painting transitions between colors that aren’t separated by line work, I switch to another particle brush. This brush has a width of 100, particle size of 20, particle density of 4, spray deviation of 100 and stiffness of 100.

A Helpful Start To Digital Art

To add more depth to the lighting, add another layer of shadow. This time a light blue color has been set on the layer to multiply. I paint in some areas that may be too dark depending on the light source and my completely untrained understanding of light.

Now to add some depth in the other direction: more light! A new layer set to screen allows me to add some brighter areas very easily. I simply test the color I want to lighten, then paint it into the screen layer. This results in a very good choice of lighter color. I’m very liberal on this layer when it comes to hair because I like to make hair super shiny, but I try not to go crazy with the rest.

Do you know what looks really cool? Rim lighting for no reason! Using another New Layer (still clipping in the red layer’s Fill layer), set to Screen, I draw the light on the edge of the letter usually opposite the main light source. I feel like this makes everything I draw pop out of the background more. Maybe not the best for every occasion, but this is all about looking cool as fast and pixelated as possible. I also added a New Layer just set to normal to add some pure white gloss to her eyes and hair. Notice that this is above the line art layer so it obscures the lines on her eyes!

Usually after that I’ll make it a bit more fancy using Photoshop for post processing. Clip Studio is also capable, but Photoshop is a bit better at adjusting colors in the end. For the sake of this example I’ll call this done At this point, I started drawing digital art in 2016. And I can tell you that the learning curve to learn digital art is a bit high at first because it looks so different and takes some time to get used to.

So, instead of using traditional media like canvas, paper, and pencils, you use your computer, graphic tablet, or both to create works of art.

You can also create artwork using traditional media, scan it into your computer, and retouch it with Photoshop or similar software.

Digital art is changing the world, and it is much easier to get clients and send them finished pieces via email than it is to physically send artwork.

I make a lot of money per month as a digital artist doing portraits, ebook covers, and illustrations for bloggers.

As You Can See In My Posts, I Am Working On

I understand that the Wacom Cintiq isn’t an affordable option for most beginning animators, so I highly recommend getting a Wacom Intuosif if you’re strapped for cash.

This tablet does not have a display so while you are drawing on it you have to look at your monitor or laptop screen to understand where the cursor is and what you are drawing.

I used Wacom for two years before I upgraded to this iPad Pro (which has now dropped in price) and the Pencil.

I now only use my iPad to draw all of my illustrations because I’ve traveled a lot (pre-COVID), and it really paid for it.

I highly recommend getting an aniPad pro and an Apple Pencil if you love digital illustration and want to pursue it as a profession or just want to do it as a hobby.

Many artists draw their rough sketches directly on the tablet, but I find it much easier to draw my rough sketches on the paper rather than on the board. I love that feeling of pencil on paper; It’s normal for me.
