How To Write On Canvas – In a previous DIY article, I outlined my 3 favorite ways to paint quotes on canvas to create beautiful, personalized pieces of art. I got a good response from the article and a lot of positive feedback, so I decided to write another one! If you haven’t already, check out my post DIY- 3 Easy Ways to Paint Quotes on Canvas.

In this article I share 3 more easy ways you can add your favorite words, quotes, sayings or lyrics to canvas. To get started, you need stretched canvas. I like to use a high quality canvas stapled on the back rather than the sides, like this Winsor Newton canvas. Next you need paint. I find that acrylic paint works best because it dries quickly. You can also use spray paint for some of these projects (I like Krylon brand spray paint best). Finally, I recommend using a finishing spray once you’re done painting to protect it. I use Krylon finishing spray which comes in gloss, satin and matte (satin is my favorite!).

A foolproof way to put letters on a canvas is to attach them collage-style. This style provides a clean look to your painting and is great if you don’t want to paint letters by hand. You can use letters or words from a magazine or leaflet, print out words or use letter stickers. You can even cut letters out of interesting materials, like wallpaper samples or cards!

1. Paint your canvas the background color of your choice. Make sure the color contrasts with the colors of your letters. Let it dry completely.

3. Cover the back of each letter with Mod Podge and stick it to the canvas. Add another layer of Mod Podge on top. It will look like a white mess, but I promise- it will dry clear! Let the cloth dry.

4. Apply another layer of Mod Podge over the letters to seal any edges and let dry. You may need to do this again to ensure the edges don’t flake, depending on how thick your letters are.

5. Seal your painting with a finishing spray (optional). The Mod Podge acts like a seal coat, but I like to use the spray finish at the end to fill in any brush strokes that are left and make the painting look more even.

In my last DIY I explained one way to use stickers to create letters on canvas. This technique is a little different – I like to call it “reverse pasting.” This gives the canvas a very different look than the other technique, and allows you to create texture and add different colors.

3. Carefully paint over your letter stickers. Make sure you don’t use hard brush strokes or you can move the stickers. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different directions of your brush strokes and thickness of your paint! Let your cloth dry.

4. Carefully peel the stickers off the canvas, making sure not to remove any paint. (Tip: you can use an old pair of tweezers to help you remove the stickers).

Paint pens work well if you like handwriting or calligraphy and want to transfer your words to canvas in your own handwriting. They also work great if you have a lot of writing or very small print to transfer. If it sounds too intimidating to write directly on your canvas, don’t worry – you can sketch your letters on paper or print words from the computer and transfer them to your canvas.

Using a paint pen is a great way to transfer quotes in your own handwriting to the canvas.

2. If you’re going to outline your letters first, you’ll use the same method I outlined in my last DIY article. Use your ruler to measure the size you want the letters on the canvas and make appropriately sized lines to guide you on a piece of paper. Draw your letters on the paper.

3. Place a piece of carbon paper face down on the canvas, place your paper with your letters on top and tape it down. Make sure you stick the paper in the position you want the letters in – use a ruler to make sure it’s centered.

4. Trace over the letters with a ball point pen, press firmly. Peel off the paper and carbon paper to reveal your transfer.

How To Write On Canvas

I am currently working on my future baby boy’s nursery. Since we’re going with a loose theme of vintage camp decor, I wanted to incorporate some cards.

Working With The Mission Model Canvas

This hand-lettered card canvas idea matches the best! I came up with an easy way to hand out letters on a canvas covered with the cards and, even if you don’t consider yourself great with letters, this method should work for you!

The first step is to cover your canvas with cards or scrapbook paper. I used the Ultra Matte Chalk Mod Podge and loved the finish it gave!

Apply a medium coat of Mod Podge to the canvas and smooth the card on top. With cards and thinner papers, using a brayer really helps.

When you disconnect on canvas, it also helps to turn the canvas over and smooth it from the inside. Since cloth has some give, it really helps to place it face down on a hard surface (covered, of course).

What Is A Business Model Canvas Vs Business Plan?

Once you have finished applying and smoothing the paper, let it dry for 15 – 20 minutes before applying a top coat.

Now it’s time to plan your letters. You can use a free printable you find online, or something freehand.

I tried a few different ways to write my phrase and practiced until I liked how it looked. But it would work just as well with a print.

Press very hard with a dark crayon and color in all the areas with writing on the other side.

I should have used a black crayon for this step, but it still worked out well. You can also use graphite or even chalk if your canvas is covered with a dark colored paper or paint.

Stick your paper on the canvas and trace over the letters, pressing really hard with a pen or pencil. You may want to go over each letter a few times.

When you lift the paper, the chalk will transfer onto the cardstock. It’s very light, but just enough to see to trace it with a Sharpie!
