The Mercedes-Benz GLA is an entry-level SUV offering from the premium automaker that ticks all the boxes and is our pick in the segment.

SUV is the flavor of the season and is loved by all as it makes a lot of sense for our road conditions. If you want an SUV from a premium car maker like Mercedes-Benz, your most accessible option is the GLA. Until now, the GLA was an urban crossover type of car but for the year 2021, Mercedes-Benz has rolled out the GLA with a lot of updates. Here is our review of it.

Bmw X1 S Drive 20 D 2018

The first thing you notice is the fact that the new GLA has become more SUV-like. A big factor that helps give this solid first impression is the fact that the GLA now has a significantly higher roofline. Additionally, the larger 19-inch wheels, sloping roofline and wider base of the car give the GLA a very different stance compared to the older model. It also sports the latest grille design which looks great.

Once you get inside the GLA, you’ll notice a major change in the new interior design. Compared to the old GLA, this represents a major improvement in almost every department. You have new design elements throughout the cabin including a nice metallic-finish insert on the dash but the highlight is the driver-side half of the dash. In front of you is a large slab of glass that gives the impression that it is one continuous, large screen, even though two screens are fitted within one panel. Regardless, it looks really cool and will start a conversation whenever you put someone inside the car for the first time.

What I like is the turn-to-close AC vent that has a neat design. Additionally, while you can see the ambient light at night, these vents also light up from within. This, in my opinion, is a party trick of the GLA.

That aside, let’s talk about the steering-mounted controls. Does anyone remember the blackberry phone? No, just me?

However, you have a trackpad on the steering wheel which is touch sensitive and the left half of the steering wheel controls the infotainment system and the right half controls the all-digital instrument cluster. It is really nice and convenient setup. In terms of practicality, you have a lot of space around you and you also have a tray that you can slide open to reveal a wireless charging pad.

What I want to talk about is the USB port. 5 of them are inside the car, one you have in the center console, two of them in the elbow box and two for the people sitting in the back – all of them USB-C. I think that’s great future-proofing since everything will be USB-C anyway, so good thinking on behalf of Mercedes-Benz. If you’re currently worried about how to use it and don’t have a device with a USB-C port, you can get yourself an adapter that’s fairly cheap and can be brought online.

Moving on, Mercedes-Benz has made some strange choices with the GLA as it misses out on some essential features. First, the car doesn’t have a proximity sensor so you don’t get a beeping sound indicating the distance between the car and an obstacle when you’re parking it. After that, the doors don’t auto-unlock by sensing the proximity of the key, so you have to take the key out of your pocket and press the button each time to open the car. Finally, while it has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, you can’t use it wirelessly.

Let’s talk about the infotainment system in the car. This is the new MBUX infotainment system and there are three ways you can operate it. You have the trackpad, as I mentioned earlier, you can also do things by touching the screen and then, you also have the trackpad which has great haptic feedback. There are also a lot of customization options and include ‘themes’ that you can choose from. Once the full display layout is selected, the color and design elements on both the infotainment system and the instrument cluster are completely changed. GLA will show you relevant information based on the theme you select.

Well, it’s time to experience the back seat and the moment you sit here, you’ll realize that there’s a lot more space on offer compared to the old-generation GLA. For reference, I am 5’10” and after setting the driver seat to my height, I still had a good amount of legroom, knee room and a decent amount of headroom on offer. The seats are comfortable. Seating with three people would be a bit of a squeeze so it’s best for two. You also have a large sunroof that lets in a lot of light and makes the car feel more spacious. While the cabin is spacious, the boot space is decent at best.

Coming to the GLA’s driving experience, let’s keep it real. The chances of it going proper off-roading are slim and although it now feels more robust and SUV-like, the GLA will live its life on city and highway roads. In town, the GLA always feels easy to drive thanks to its light steering wheel and the big wave of torque that the diesel engine is happy to deliver at low RPM. The gearbox also does not disappoint and overall, the car feels smooth in the city. Also, in my opinion, this size SUV is perfect for city roads.

As for the suspension and chassis setup, the car soaks up bad road patches well but you have to be a bit cautious going over sharp bumps. But as the speed picks up, things get better and the GLA becomes truly delightful. The ride quality becomes more stable and the car feels responsive and nimble even at triple-digit speeds.

It is also here that you can fully enjoy the 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder diesel engine that makes 190 HP and 400 Nm of torque. Here, this torquey diesel engine is well complemented by an 8-speed DCT gearbox. The keyword, however, is refinement, not performance. So keep in mind that this is not an all-out sporty SUV but it is refined enough that it will still be fun to drive in almost all conditions. Just don’t expect it to be the fastest in the segment.

So to sum it all up, the Mercedes-Benz GLA has changed itself a lot and not only in terms of the way it looks but also in the image it carries with it. This is something that many people interested in this car will appreciate. And when you add to the equation the latest design language by Mercedes-Benz with a new interior package, you have a car that is a truly convincing proposition. Yes, there are some features that are missing but overall, the Mercedes-Benz GLA has turned out to be a car that I wouldn’t really recommend as a pick in my segment.

I am looking to buy a luxury car (only SUV and petrol option) and my budget is around 50L. Here are some suggestions from experts.

The current generation X1 is very long in the tooth, while the GLA is best bought with a diesel. Since you have a budget of 50-lakh, I would recommend you the new C-class (must stretch the budget a bit) and the 3-series. Both are absolutely great cars and will serve you well for 10 years, without either feeling old or outclassed (although a baby crossover will).

Booked A Toyota Fortuner But Now Tempted By More Premium Luxury Suvs

The new generation of X1 is just around the corner and it is likely to be launched either in Q1 2023 or Q4 2022. The GLA is a fresh-baked product but the petrol engine is a joke for Mercedes-Benz, especially when they previously offered a better petrol engine. Also, I feel the quality of the cabin is not up to Benz standards, it has been cheapened compared to previous cars. I’d personally like to stay away from the GLA as it’s a bit overpriced for what it has to offer and for its smaller 1.3 petrol engine. Wild card entry: Why not consider the Volvo XC40? It’s a nice overall package, lots more
