Mompreneurship is on fire right now. And for good reason. We live in a time and age where women are encouraged to be as educated as their peers and can start climbing the corporate ladder they want. However, there are still many women who long to be stay-at-home moms. I always dreamed of being a mom. When I came up with the idea of becoming an auctioneer, I saw it as an opportunity to work for myself, set my own schedule and stay home with my kids while having a career to call my own. And that’s exactly what happened.

Creating a healthy work-life balance as an entrepreneur does not come naturally. It is a strategic decision.1. Decide what your priorities are and don’t hesitate.
My priority is that when my children are awake and at home with me, they have my full attention. It doesn’t have to be your priority, your work/life purpose may look different. Maybe you have older kids and homeschool so you work when they work or whatever, but I want to slow down and be with my kids when they’re awake. I don’t answer the phone when they’re awake (actually never, but more on that in the next step), I don’t answer emails, and I don’t write content when I could reach them.
I will say that now that my kids are getting a little older and more independent, sometimes they like to play by themselves, so if they are playing in a safe environment (meaning not near the knife block in the kitchen or at the top of the stairs), I just explain to them that mom going to do some work and if they need me they should shout. If they come up to me with fancy pancakes, I immediately stop what I’m doing, eat them and ask for more. It is so important to me that my children know that they are my priority.
You control your time and business processes. It took me a long time to realize that. I love people, so I schedule meetings whenever I work for a client or schedule events as part of my services (turns out I’m a crazy auctioneer, but a phenomenal auctioneer). Every time I gave in, it just turned out to be unpleasant. So, I set up some processes and even put them on my website.

My phone number is not listed on my website. A resourceful person could probably find it with a minimal Google search, but mostly people have to email me to contact me. I let them know they will hear back within 24 hours to schedule a call. I then schedule a call where I call them. I’m very punctual, so I prefer to be the one making the call, otherwise people waste my time.
I set these boundaries and expectations from the beginning so my clients know what to expect. If they’re not happy with my process, I’m sure we won’t be a good fit to work together. Have you ever heard the phrase that the people who spend 80% of your time only give you 20% of your income? I’d rather take a 20% cut to get all that extra time back.

This is big for me. It’s hard for me not to be the most popular person. I should get used to it by now because there was never a time in my life when I was a popular person, but a girl can still want.

I am a very gifted auctioneer, but not a TOP auctioneer in my area. Why? Because building a high-profile company requires time, skills and resources that I simply don’t want to invest. All of my competitors run hundreds of auctions per year (including auctions run by their partners) while I allow a maximum of 30 auctions. year. My business is very seasonal so I only work September to November and February to May so any 30+ auctions during that time would wreck my family.
I also run my business solely on repeat business, referrals and simple Google traffic. I don’t have a sales associate (or myself) to call all the “big” customers. In fact, I have one fee no matter how “big” my client is, so it doesn’t matter to me if I’m working with a well-known national organization headed by a big celebrity, or if I’m working in fundraising. for the local school. The truth is, the latter is much more fun!

This is for SAHMs whose husbands work. If you’re a single mom, your budget is, of course, the money you get. If you’re married to a SAHM, we live in a two-income world, or so they tell us. If you follow any financial blogs, you see story after story of families slashing their budgets to live on one income. It’s called living below your means.
Moms, Work And The Pandemic
All of our daily expenses are covered by my husband’s budget alone: mortgage, groceries, bills, phone, internet, utilities, etc.
This means that if I stopped working tomorrow, we would survive without much sacrifice. We don’t rely on my budget which is good because I have some months where I make exactly zero dollars and other months I bring in $10,000-$15,000. I save almost 50% of my income for taxes (I only need to save about 30% for taxes, but I’d rather save more money than not enough and get a *bonus* at the end) and the rest of my money is used for bigger wants and needs: topping up our emergency fund, car savings, vacations, extravagant date nights (guys, we went to Chicago over the weekend and recently met up with Hamilton on a date…yeah, extravagant), designer denim, and investing in yourself (health and career stuff ).
You can budget however you like, but I’ve found that living on one income puts a lot of pressure on me to be desperate to build my business. I can be more selective about what clients I take on and I can charge what I’m worth and not worry about clients wanting to haggle my rate.
