It is a bipartisan group of lawmakers who have acknowledged close ties to companies that have received loans from the program — companies that are either run by their families or employ their spouses as senior executives.

Republicans on the list include Rep. Roger Williams of Texas, a wealthy businessman who owns an auto dealership, body shop and a car wash, and Rep. Vicky Hartzler of Missouri, whose family runs in the Midwest Owns multiple farms and equipment suppliers. Democrats include Rep. Suzy Lee of Nevada, whose husband is the CEO of a regional casino developer, and Rep. Debbie Mukasell Powell of Florida, whose husband is an executive with a restaurant chain, The loan has since been repaid.

Members Of Congress Took Small Business Loans — And The Full Extent Is Unknown

As images of crowded Florida beaches flashed across television screens, critics grimly predicted that hospitals would be overloaded. But that didn’t happen. Now, cases are surging as Florida prepares to host the Republican convention.

There are almost certainly more, according to aides and lawmakers. But only the Small Business Administration and the Treasury Department have that information, and the Trump administration declined to provide any details. It’s entirely up to business owners — including elected officials — to decide whether to extend a loan of up to $10 million.

Democrats are trying to pry open the recipient list. But their push in the House to require disclosure of at least some company information was blocked late last month by Republicans — including Williams and Hartzler, who voted against the bill. Lee and Powell join all Democrats in backing it. All four lawmakers had previously voted in favor of the small business plan.

Spokespeople for Williams and Hartzler declined to say how much money was provided in the loans to privately held companies owned by lawmakers. Full House Resorts, of which Lee’s husband is president and CEO, received $5.6 million, according to SEC filings. Fiesta Restaurant Group, which hired Mucarsel Powell’s husband as an executive, received $15 million before being refunded in full.

A spokesman for Mucarsel Powell said her husband played no role in applying for the PPP loan and did not benefit financially from the aid; he accepted a pay cut from his employer during the recession.

Banks, Ppp Recipients Caught In Bind Between Two Sba Rescue Programs

While it is not illegal for lawmakers to apply for or accept the money, it raises new questions about potential conflicts of interest for lawmakers in crafting the next coronavirus relief package and the administration’s tight secrecy over the $670 billion plan. The scheme has come under scrutiny for helping those close to it after reports showed that large companies were among the first to receive loans, with the smallest businesses lagging behind.

Now it is beset by a growing number of transparency complaints, with the Treasury Department and the SBA refusing to disclose recipients after officials initially said the data would be released under Freedom of Information Act requests. Information has been sought under FOIA.

Both Democrats and Republicans have vowed to provide strong oversight of Congress’ spending on coronavirus relief, including its signature lending program. But Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has so far declined to name the recipients of those loans, though he said Monday he plans to hold talks with lawmakers to seek details about the loans.
