One of the things I regularly hear from moms is that they don’t know how to dress after giving birth. They’ve lost their style, they’ve lost their mojo, they’ve lost their sense of self and they don’t even know where to start.

I have been a stay at home mom for the last 12 of my 15 years. And during that time there were periods of losing my sense of self that was directly linked to my style.
Combine this with all the other life adjustments that must have been made, the whole time it was mind boggling… and it did so well.
I was living in a small town at the time, with desperate shopping, and all Canadian online shopping was very limited so I just kind of gave up.

When you don’t know what to wear or how to wear it, and you just want to feel good when you leave the house again, your best bet is to start small and build up.

What works for me, may not work for you. What colors appeal to you, may appeal to someone else. There is no tried and true formula for a capsule wardrobe.

And your formula is the set of combinations that work for you. I always try to have a dress or more high tops in what I’m wearing to balance out the outfit.
For example, if I’m wearing jeans, a t-shirt, and sneakers, I might add a nice blazer and handbag to dress it up.

Tip: You can change the entire look of an outfit simply by changing the shoes. I’m not kidding. Try it.
Another tip: Don’t be who you are. I wear a lot of jeans. Like maybe 6/7 days a week some kind of jeans (these are my favorite pair because they really hug your body when you break them in).
If I tried to build a wardrobe that only had one pair of jeans because I was trying to force my style in a certain direction, I wouldn’t succeed with this capsule.

And if you have a lot of mom friends, do a dress swap. You may be surprised at the pieces that other people recommend.
If you are the list type person, make a list of the items that would make up your ideal wardrobe.
This will help guide you when you are looking to buy things. This will also help keep you on track so you don’t end up buying something that doesn’t work.
