Exploring the beautiful canals by boat is one of the absolute musts in Amsterdam that should be at the top of every Amsterdam bucket list!
The Must See Architecture In Amsterdam
It was built in the late 16th – early 17th century, the canals of the city are full of some interesting buildings. Taking a boat tour on the canals also gives you a glimpse into the ‘real’ Amsterdam. What’s more, watching the city from the water gives you a new perspective and allows you to see a lot in a short amount of time.
It’s a great first introduction to the city, so I recommend taking a canal walk at the beginning of your trip.
There are many different canal cruises to choose from, lasting from about 1 to 1.5 hours. It’s a good idea to do your research ahead of time to find the one that’s right for you, and not just hop on the first boat you come across and be disappointed that it’s not what you thought it would be.
I also recommend booking in advance if you are visiting during high season. This is a popular activity as well

Boat tours are for sale. Another bonus is that advanced booking allows you to get to the front of the line, ahead of those who have not reserved a spot.
TIP: The canals of Amsterdam are also very beautiful in the evening when everything is brightly lit. So be sure to come back and see them in the dark, or take an evening tour too! This evening cruise of the canal is the most popular cruise in the dark. Or you can choose a relaxing cruise with pizza and drinks.
Amsterdam has many canals and while it is fun to explore them by boat, walking along them is a different experience that you should not miss. So – in addition to taking a boat trip – be sure to explore the canals on foot.
Undoubtedly, there are more canals to see in Amsterdam than you can manage in one visit. So make sure to surf with some of the best waves! These include

The Herengracht Canal is worth a visit too. But you may see it as part of a boat tour as well. This is also why we recommend doing a boat tour first – you can decide if you want to explore some places on foot, or just focus on the places you can’t see from the boat not yet.
Exploring the ‘Grachtengordel’ canals is truly one of the best things to do in Amsterdam. The whole area is very beautiful!
With around 8,000 historical exhibits and works of art, the Imperial Museum features world-class masterpieces such as The Milkmaid and The Night Watch. You’ll also find works by Vermeer and Rembrandt, along with important pieces by Vincent Van Gogh. There are rotating temporary exhibitions with a variety of workshops, so it’s always worth a visit, even if you’ve been before.
