There are many things you can do at the Colosseum and different levels you can visit. We recommend you go for the full experience – from discovering the secrets of the Colosseum Underground to taking the unique opportunity to stand on the partially restored Arena Floor, to soaking in the most impressive views from the upper levels.
Good to know: the Colosseum is one of the most visited places in Rome and booking tickets (or a guided tour) in advance is essential! If you go on your own, you can buy regular priority tickets or – a little more expensive – priority tickets that also include a visit to the Arena Floor.
However, the crowds here are overwhelming and it’s not always clear where to go… So I highly recommend visiting the Colosseum with a local guide! In this way, you don’t have to worry about any practicalities and have a much better idea of what you see, how this arena works, and what life looked like in Rome during the glory days of the Roman Empire. There are countless options when it comes to guided tours, but make sure you read carefully what they include.
TIP: I recommend this amazing tour that includes ALL levels of the Colosseum + a guided tour of the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill. We visited all these places in one tour and it was a great choice. Priority entry certainly helps, but having the guide with us made the visit much more enjoyable. We do not need to emphasize where exactly to go, which entrance to take, how to go from one level to another, or what to see in the huge Roman Forum – site Palatine Hill.

TIP: Almost 2000 years old, the Pantheon is a fascinating place with so much history, so make sure you read up a bit before you go. Alternatively, if you want to know more about the Pantheon and everything you see inside, you can get an audio guide, or visit it with one of the guided tours of the historic center of the city.
No trip to Rome would be complete without seeing the famous Trevi Fountain. And, like the legend, you also have to throw a coin in the fountain, if you want to return to the eternal city. Having tossed a few coins here over the years, I have to say it definitely works – we always go back to Rome. 😉
There are two more reasons to throw a coin in the Trevi fountain – one is to find love in Rome, and the other – to get married in Rome. Each of these ‘wants’ requires a separate coin and you cannot throw them all together.
Also, before you just throw a coin in the water, you should know that there is a whole instruction on “the only right way” to do it. You must stand with your back to the fountain and throw the coin with your right hand over your left shoulder. Oh, and try to get someone to take your picture without too many people around…
