Top 10 Things To See And Do In Sabah, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia and most likely the city you flew into on your way to Malaysia. It’s worth spending a few days in the city before heading out to see the rest of the country. It is one of the cleanest, most pristine and beautiful capital cities we have visited in Asia.

While there, you can’t miss the Petronas Towers, one of the world’s most iconic sites. When we arrived in town we didn’t realize it was Earth Hour so the towers weren’t lit up! When we checked into our hotel room (which was right across from the towers) we were able to witness the lights being turned on which was an amazing sight!

We also recommend visiting the famous Sky Bar. High up on the 33rd floor of Traders is the famous Sky Bar. Here you can sip a cocktail, listen to a DJ and enjoy amazing views of the Petronas Twin Towers from your cab! They also have very good food here, so we suggest you come at sunset to have dinner and enjoy the cool atmosphere.

We highly recommend spending some time in Merapoh to go and explore some caves. Merapoh has more than 400 caves, of which only 85 have been properly explored. We literally walked through rivers in the dark and ended up in pristine jungle on the other side.

Malaysians are very friendly people. During the three weeks we traveled through Malaysia, the locals invited us twice to enjoy a home-cooked meal with them, both of which were our favorite meals we ate in Malaysia.

As with many cultures, the Malays have certain eating etiquette that you should familiarize yourself with before visiting:

3. As a sign of respect, guests are seated on the left side of the oldest member of the family.

4. Wait for the host to signal when you can start eating. Starting to eat without asking shows disrespect and can also mean that you are in a hurry to leave.

5. The use of the left hand for both serving and eating food should be strictly avoided. The left hand is used for toilet purposes and should not be seen when handling food on the dining table.

7. Every grain of rice is sacred and must not be wasted. This means that you need to get enough rice so that you know you will be able to finish.

What we liked about this national park is that visitors to Bako will almost certainly see wildlife. Proboscis monkeys and silver-leafed monkeys roam the trees, wild boars are often found prowling around the park entrance, squirrels and lizards abound, and there is a good chance of seeing the rare and unusual monkey monkeys on trails such as Telok. Paku and Telok Delima, especially if you go in the late afternoon!

At Taiping Orangutan Island, you can spend some time volunteering with these endangered animals. This sanctuary is home to orangutans who have been rescued from illegal captivity and/or trade until they are ready to be released back into the wild. Lend a hand. here, after all, these wonderful and extremely intelligent animals can be saved.

What we loved about this place is that the orangutans aren’t the ones in the enclosures – we are! Trails through the island are caged to keep workers and volunteers safe, and the rest of the island is free to allow the orangutans to roam, climb trees, and even build nests to breed.

We spent a week volunteering here, helping the workers feed, clean and observe these amazing animals.

In Merapoh we spent one night camping in the jungle. We slept under a natural tent like the Batek tribe used in the area. We were actually in Merapoh volunteering to help conserve the endangered Malayan tiger found in the area and this jungle camping was part of that experience.

We had to collect leaves and sticks to help build and support our tent and cooked dinner in bamboo over a fire – it was one of those nights we’ll never forget!
