Best of all, you can even find some beautiful beaches and warm tropical waters that you would never have thought existed in Singapore. Or at least I didn’t before we moved there.

Top Things To Do When You’re In Singapore

With that in mind, I wanted to share some of my favorite and best things to do in Singapore on your trip. Some are small little spots, some are interesting attractions. Either way, hopefully a few will catch their eye.

One place I kept visiting when I was in Singapore was the Botanic Gardens. It was founded in 1859 and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2015.

Now, when you visit, don’t miss the orchid garden. It has a spectacular array of species from around the world that you won’t want to miss.

Oh yeah, and look out for the friendly bowls. Don’t squeeze your fingers close though – they can snap!

Things To Do In Singapore: 8 Top Experiences

It takes about 2-3 hours to explore the gardens, so it’s a perfect afternoon activity. I personally prefer early morning or late afternoon when the sun’s rays are a little less extreme. The heat and humidity can be intense in Singapore.

Just a few minutes’ walk from Chinatown, the Sri Mariamman Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in all of Singapore.

Now it is still one of my favorite temples and things to do in Singapore. Wander the property, learn about its history, and explore the surrounding neighborhoods for lunch.

As I mentioned before, Chinatown is so close and one of the best places to grab street food on the way.

Located about 6km from the ‘mainland’, Kusu Island is one of the best things to do in Singapore on a lazy weekend.

Now home to the Da Bogong Temple and some beautiful marble turtles (as well as a few real ones), it’s a great place to take a break from city life while visiting Singapore.

Apparently (in Malay and Chinese folklore) Kusu Island was formed by a turtle in the Singapore Plains that saw two sailors in distress and quickly turned into a small island to save them, or so I was told at the temple.

Regardless of whether you believe the folklore, Kusu Ireland is the perfect way to spend 4 to 5 hours enjoying the silence, temples and nature this island has to offer.

When I visited I combined it with a visit to St John Island which took 6-8 hours in total. We have taken over the ship, so check the times (here) before planning your trip.

Most people who visit Singapore have no idea about the beautiful beaches that are just a few kilometers away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Don’t forget to check the daily ferry from the city itself and pack swimwear,  food, sun protection cream and drinks. There are no shops on this island and Singapore’s humidity and sun can be intense.

My best advice is to go here in the late afternoon and enjoy the refreshing bay after visiting some temples on the cool island of Kusu.

Singapore Stopover Guide: What To Do For 24 Hours In Singapore

Back in town, visit My Awesome Cafe (Telok Ayer Street) for a charming little restaurant that has some of the best chili in town.

About a 15-minute walk from the river itself, this lodge and temple is one of the best things to do in Singapore if you’re looking for some more hidden religious sites.

Then drop by Bitters & Love (Telok Ayer Street) for some pre-dinner cocktails. It’s such a great place.

Food is a big part of traveling, at least for me, and I always like to try some of the local dishes that people rave about.

Now for one dish that is famous in Singapore for chilli crab. This is one of the best things to do in Singapore if you want to gorge yourself!

Consisting of a whole crab that can be shared by a small group, it makes a great dinner for friends.

Usually, Chilli Crab prices vary from place to place. Prices usually fluctuate based on weight and time of day.

If you are looking for a great treat, head to ‘Jumbo’ Chilli Crab Restaurant at Clarke Quay for dinner. It costs quite a bit more than the hawker stalls or Chinatown for food, but it’s totally worth it for the treat.

Things To Do In Singapore, Including Where To Eat And Where To Stay

China Town is one of the lively little neighborhoods to enjoy. This is easily one of the best things about Singapore as it is famous for its delicious street food.

Oh, and don’t forget the markets and stalls that line the streets. Here you can try one of the “smelliest fruits in the world”, the Durian Fruit. Trust me when I say your eyes will water!

For a bit of luxury, head to the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, home to one of the world’s tallest infinity pools.

Although it is cheaper than some other hotels in the city, the pool itself is one of the best things about Singapore.

Top Things To Do In Marina Bay, Singapore

If you decide not to stay at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, you can still see the pools (and the view of the city) by visiting some of the rooftop bars on top of the hotel. This is a great place for an evening drink with a view of the city!

Be aware that alcoholic beverages can be more expensive than most other Asian cities, so keep this in mind when budgeting.

If you want to try the famous Singapore Sling cocktail, head to Raffles, Long Bar – where the cocktail was officially created. The cocktail itself is a little pricey…I think it was around $30 USD, but it’s worth a visit and a delicious drink.

The bar itself is beautifully preserved and you still throw walnut shells straight on the floor like people did in the early twentieth century. This is one of the best things to do in Singapore and a famous cocktail joint in the city.

Incredibly Expensive Things To Do

If you’re looking for some upscale hotel rooms, check out the Raffles Hotel itself. It’s wonderful.

The city is known for its love of nature, with Gardens by the Bay being one of the best things to do in Singapore when you’re in the heart of the city.

Also wander around the Supertree Grove. It is a collection of 50 meter tall (artificial) trees that imitate nature. Super Each tree acts as an irrigation tool and even acts as a cooling system for some of the domes in the gardens.

Oh, and don’t forget to visit Cloud Mountain. It’s a temperature-controlled dome, which I think is one of the best things to do in Singapore if you love nature.

When you climb 40 meters up the mountain, you will see some of the best collections of flowers and plants that have been created for us.

Use the outdoor walkways to stroll around and down the mountain while being cooled by the tropical climate and waterfalls.

Head to Singapore’s harbor area (about a 25-minute walk from Clark Quay) and see Singapore’s mascot, the Merlion.

It is located on the north side of the harbor and is only a 10 minute walk from Marina Bay Sands if you are already in the area. Oh, and don’t forget, you can even see the famous light show overlooking the harbor in the evening.

The lights are switched on at 20:00 and 21:30 from Sunday to Thursday. That being said, if you’re a night owl, there’s also a 11pm show on Friday and Saturday nights. This is truly one of the best things to do in Singapore after a long day of exploring.

If you fancy a bit of a walk, take a walk through the treetops of Singapore’s most mountainous area, the Southern Ridges. This is truly one of the best things to do in Singapore that will make you feel like you have left the city life far behind.

At almost 10 kilometers this can be a hefty walk on hot and humid days. That being said, I headed here first thing in the morning and was able to really enjoy the skywalk without being uncomfortable in the midday heat.

For a tasty bite to eat on your way, head to Aromas of India (Race Course Road) for one of the best Indian restaurants in town. It’s not fancy, but the food is absolutely delicious.
