I am not alone in this rage. Many people have heard the siren call to the colors and are ready to jump in and swim to their feet. But where does one begin? There are so many brands, colors, and accessories to buy that getting started can be a daunting task. Don’t worry, though, because we’ve got you covered with the best water supplies for beginners that won’t break the bank!
Let’s start with the foundation of your colors – paper! I’ve tried using more expensive colored paper for a long time only to be disappointed that all my pictures look terrible. Learn from my mistakes and don’t reach for the cheap option! Fortunately, there are many brands of water colors that work for beginners (and they’re really cheap, too!).

Canson Watercolor Paper – This is a great style that you can find at most hardware stores, and watercolor paper comes in a variety of sizes and shapes.
Easy Things To Paint For Beginner Artists
Strathmore Media Design – This beautiful student paper isn’t the best in art proper, but the design book is great for playing around, experimenting with techniques, and just trying to figure it out.
Strathmore Watercolor Art Journal– This journal is a mix of portable and large watercolor paper, so it’s perfect for anyone who wants to do some serious research.
Leuchtturm 1917 – If your color interests are more for bullet journals, then you’ll be pleased to know that Leuchtturm makes watercolors that are amazing for the perfect break and wash. You can find out how to stand up to the tough water test here, and the full details here!
Rhodiarama Cover Journals – This is another great journal to use in light color. Check out some of my weekly watercolor spreads to see what I mean.
What Is Watercolor Painting, And What Materials Do You Need To Start?
Hot stamping paper has a smooth texture, so it’s great if you want to add details and pencils to your pieces. This paper tends to produce better colors and better transitions.
Cold paper is recommended for beginners and watercorers. The texture of the paper holds the water and pigment in place, giving you more control over your painting. It is more absorbent than hot paper, which can help when mixing and washing. A cold press is also useful for beginners because it is one of the most common types of water press you can find.

PrangWatercolors – If you just want to create basic pieces with bright colors, this inexpensive method will cover you well. Student paints are cheap and affordable. But be aware – any good blending, bleeding, or other effects of watercolors will not be possible with cheap products.

Sennelier Watercolors – These beautiful watercolors are my favorite watercolors, and my absolute favorites! The colors are rich and creamy, and give a beautiful effect when dry.
Finetec GoldWatercolor Palette – Finetec offers a wide variety of palettes. I use this palette all the time and it’s worth the penny!
Painting Tools You Need (and 5 You Don’t)
Dr.
Pentel Aquash Water Brush Pen – This set of three water brushes is exactly what I need. The water is in barrels, so it’s easy to bring and there’s no better way to set it up. It’s also fun for brush lettering or painting, if that floats your boat.
Brush Set – If you need to brush more on the watercolor, you only need a small round brush set as a starter.
Pigma Micron Pencils – If you want to do any artwork before or after coloring, these pencils are great because they won’t bleed and come in contact with water.

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen – I use this pen with my work all the time to add lines in the final stages and I highly recommend it.
Masking Tape – This is needed to keep your colored paper from moving when you paint it.
Artist Tote Board – This is the surface where you press your colored paper and create, and it’s very versatile.
Do you feel scared to start now? Don’t worry, that’s normal. Remember that you are not aiming for perfection. Water color is not active. It is wild, spontaneous, and unique and you will need patience while learning your tools and equipment. Just give yourself time to draw simple things.
