Every once in a while, I come across my decorating and DIY pages and it gives me the urge to pick it up. A home project. I’ve been buying rugs recently to make our home cozy and warm, and I thought it would be fun to try incorporating a rug into our space (using the latch hook capabilities for wall hanging!) .

1. Fold one edge over once or twice and whipstitch around the edge until secure. Repeat on all sides to bind the edges of the rug.

3. Wrap the yarn around the bottom of the hook and pull the yarn around the top of the hook.

4. The hook will begin to pull down. The smaller hand wraps the lid around the hook.

5-6. Continue pulling down through the hole. 7. Repeat with each square until you reach the finished rug!

This rug took me several weeks to complete, but it was so fun and relaxing to watch movies and sit by the fire. I’m excited to have such a special piece for our new home!

We’ve made a lot of rugs over the years on the blog, so take a look and get crafty! xo. KatieI made a large DIY rug (5×8) from scratch with just a few supplies. You can make one too… in any size you want!

The Beginner’s Guide To Laying Carpets

After my DIY weaving project I felt like I needed another challenge, so I decided to tackle another large-scale project on my list… a DIY rug from scratch! I was in desperate need of a new rug and searched tirelessly for one that I loved (and was on a budget).

Unfortunately, I have very expensive taste because every rug that works is outside of what my wallet feels like it can handle. So, like any DIYer, I decided to make one myself using cotton tubes.

It was definitely a labor of love (I’m sure that’s what it’s like to make a giant rug by hand), but I really like how it turned out. It comes just in time for the weather to start getting cooler because it’s as cozy as it comes… it’s like walking on clouds! Super fluffy and plush.

This DIY rug technique can be used as a runner, a small rug in the kitchen or bathroom, or a large rug for seating areas like mine. Want to make a cotton rug like this yourself?

How To Make Hand Knotted Rugs

*Cotton piping is available in various thicknesses (1/4 inch to 1 inch and up) and any thickness will work for this project. But the thicker the pipe, the faster the DIY process (and you’ll use less yardage to complete it).

My personal favorites for piping sizes are: 1/2 inch and 11/16 inch, but you can use any size. Piping comes in many sizes.

1. Decide how long you want your rug to be. In my case, I wanted a 5×8 rug under the bed.

My netting is smaller than that, so I did some quick math to determine how many pieces I would need to cut a 5X8 mat (3 pieces 8 feet long since the netting is 2 feet wide). Also, I’ll have an extra foot left from the width so I can cut the loop off before starting.

How Much Does It Cost To Start A Carpet Cleaning Business?

Once you’ve found it, lay out the length of webbing you need and cut the strips with a pair of scissors.

2. Next, start cutting cotton tubes about 4 inches long (each). You want them all to be roughly the same length, so that the finished rug looks relatively flat, while also having a little variation, so you can get a rough, handmade (and not manufactured) feel.

Note: Depending on the size of your rug, you may need more cotton piping than you expect. To give you a better idea of what I’m talking about… we used over 200 yards of cotton tubing for a 5×8 rug. That’s a lot of cotton!

But cotton piping is very affordable, so it’s relatively budget-friendly when you consider the price of a thick handmade rug like this that can cost thousands of dollars to buy at a store.

3. Next, weave the cut cotton pieces between the web grid as shown in the photo. Then, pull the pieces up and tie them together with a rubber band (again, as shown in the photo).

Once secured with a rubber band, scoop out the piping pieces so they have a fuzzy pom-pom shape.

The process is the same as step #3, but this time, you will weave the pieces through the ends of each individual mesh to join them together.

Secure them together in a ‘pom-pom shape’ (for lack of a better phrase) with rubber bands and pop them out safely once you’re done.

Why You Should Hire A Professional Carpet Cleaner

6. Repeat this process along the edge of all pieces to be joined together until finished.

7. Finally, with a pair of sharp scissors, trim the edge or interior pieces where they appear to be needed.

I like to trim the outer edges all the way to make them even with each other, and then occasionally there are inner pieces that need a trim because it’s longer than the rest.

You can use any size piping to make a rug like the one you see in this post, but one thing to note, the smaller the piping, the longer it will take to finish your rug.

How To Make A Denim Rug

For example, if you use 1/6 inch thick cotton piping, you may need to double the piping in the webbing to get a thicker, thinner look like mine. But if you’re using 1/2 inch or thicker tubing, you don’t have to.

My favorite cotton piping sizes for rugs I’ve made with this technique are 1/2 inch and 11/16 inch. I like the 1 inch thick tubes, but not as much as the other two.
