I’d say if you’re asking the question of whether or not you should complete this exercise, you probably need more than you think.
Having a plan and strategy to go into business and knowing who your customers are and how you can help them is CRITICAL to success.

If you’ve been following along, I’ve been putting together posts about each of these over the last week or so.
If you look at the canvas as a whole, the right half of the canvas is basically the “front of house” stuff, like the types of customers you help, how you keep them, etc.
The left half of the canvas is like the “back of the house” where you focus on the activities you do in business, what resources you need, who your key partners are, etc.
Both sides meet in the middle in your value propositions, which are basically the types of offers you have for your clients and customers.

I know you’ve heard all about defining your niche, and choosing your avatar for your business. This builds upon that exercise.
A customer segment is a group of people (or businesses if you’re a B2B company) to whom you want to sell your products and services. easier.
How do you acquire, maintain and grow/upsell customers? How do you interact with your current and potential customers? What kind of relationship do they expect from working with you?

Think about the methods you will use to attract the right people to your business. Where are your current customers hanging out? Are they on Facebook, or are they lingering in industry-specific forums asking questions?
Acquiring customers can be challenging, and it’s always easier to sell to current customers than to get new ones. How are you going to keep your customers around?
Do you want to send a postcard for a special event, have a monthly check call, or just surprise and delight them with a freebie? Maybe you are promoting your customers on social media, whatever it is, pay attention to it.

This is one of the more important exercises to do because if you don’t know what you’re providing and to whom, you’ll end up dropping more than you need to.
It is very important, that half of the business model canvas is actually called value proposition canvas (I know, ALL of the canvases!).
What do you need to do to make money? What kind of activities do you need to do to provide that value to the customer?
How exactly are you going to provide value and what types of activities need to happen in order for your customers to get what they want?

As we determined in the value proposition phase, there are certain things customers are going to expect from your business. The canvas key activity block helps us know what it is and what we need to notice that doesn’t necessarily lead to value.
Key Resources are essential for your business to build the value proposition you promise to customers. Without these resources, you will not be able to deliver value, and you will not have the business to build a business model canvas.
There are four types of key resources: financial, intellectual, human and physical. These can be things like machinery, systems and processes, patents, sales force, credit cards, and business loans.
This piece of canvas can be a little confusing when you read all the different types of partnerships out there. But if you look at the details, these strategic partnerships can be as simple as a virtual assistant (VA) you want to hire, or someone you want to enter into an affiliate relationship with.

Having a partner can be as simple as referring customers to each other. Or it can be as complicated as two businesses creating a third company together because they find a need in the market and each can contribute a piece of that new pie.
Partnerships are one of the important building blocks of the business model canvas, and for any business. It is almost impossible to have a business that provides value to customers and does not require some kind of partner.
Essentially, we answer this question: who will help you deliver that value proposition? Businesses cannot be all things to all people, so what type of partnership do you need to provide the best service?
